How to Network as a
Industrial Engineers in Consulting

Relationship Half-Life Insight

"In consulting, client and project-based relationships often have short half-lives due to project cycles. Maintain a 'Green Zone' for key decision-makers and potential future clients, and be proactive in moving 'Yellow Zone' contacts into 'Green' after project completion through value-add follow-ups. 'Red Zone' contacts, even if inactive, might become relevant again with new project types or industry shifts, so periodic, low-effort re-engagement is crucial for long-term network value."

The Three Decay Zones

Green Zone: Immediate Engagement (0-30 Days)

For current clients, key industry influentials, and frequent collaborators: Aim for bi-weekly check-ins, offer proactive insights relevant to their business, share valuable resources, and schedule informal calls or meetings to discuss industry trends. Focus on deepening the relationship beyond project scope.

Yellow Zone: Re-ignition Required (30-90 Days)

For past clients, project team members, and strong referrals: Quarterly personalized updates. Share successes from your current projects that might inspire them, send curated industry news, or invite them to relevant webinars/events. Propose a brief virtual coffee to catch up and explore new opportunities.

Reconnection Template (Yellow)

"Hi [Name], it's been a while since we worked on [Project Name] / connected at [Event]. I saw [mention something relevant to them, e.g., an article, their company's news, or a shared industry trend] and it made me think of you. Hope you're doing well! Would you be open to a quick virtual coffee sometime in the next few weeks? I'd love to hear what you're working on and share some insights from my end."

Red Zone: Relationship Recovery (90+ Days)

For dormant contacts, professional association members, and conference acquaintances: Annual, low-effort outreach. Send a LinkedIn message acknowledging a shared interest (from past conversation), congratulate them on an achievement, or share a relevant article with a short, personalized note. Focus on a non-demanding touchpoint to keep the connection alive.

Reconnection Template (Red)

"Hi [Name], I was just reflecting on our connection from [Context, e.g., 'your presentation at the IIE conference' or 'when we were both at [Old Company]'] and wanted to reach out. Hope all is well on your end! No obligation, but I thought you might find this article on [relevant industrial engineering topic/consulting trend] interesting. Always good to connect with fellow industrial engineers."

High-Value Reciprocity Angle

In consulting, reciprocity comes from demonstrating tangible value and expertise. Offer to connect contacts with others in your network who could help them (not just you), share bespoke industrial engineering insights applicable to their challenges, provide free initial assessments/thought leadership, or recommend useful tools/methodologies. Being a resource, not just a service provider, enhances relationship longevity.
