How to Network as a
Product Manager in Consulting

Relationship Half-Life Insight

"The 'SocialCraft AI relationship half-life' suggests that without active engagement, the value and strength of a professional relationship naturally decay over time. Green zone relationships are strong and active; Yellow zone relationships are weakening and need attention; Red zone relationships are dormant or lost and require significant effort to revive."

The Three Decay Zones

Green Zone: Immediate Engagement (0-30 Days)

For Green Zone relationships (active, high trust): Maintain regular, low-effort touchpoints (e.g., sharing relevant articles, congratulating on achievements). Prioritize offering value without immediate expectation of return. Utilize these relationships for introductions, brainstorming, and deeper collaboration.

Yellow Zone: Re-ignition Required (30-90 Days)

For Yellow Zone relationships (weakening, mid-level trust): Proactively re-engage with personalized outreach. Share updates on your work relevant to their interests, propose a coffee virtual or in-person catch-up, or offer assistance on a project. Focus on rekindling shared interests or past collaborations.

Reconnection Template (Yellow)

"Subject: Quick catch-up? Hi [Name], Hope you're doing well! It's been a little while, and I was thinking about [mention a past project/shared interest]. I recently [share a brief, relevant update about yourself/your work]. Would love to hear what you've been up to. Are you free for a quick virtual coffee sometime next week?"

Red Zone: Relationship Recovery (90+ Days)

For Red Zone relationships (dormant, low trust): Approach with humility and an explicit 'reconnection' angle. Acknowledge the time lapse. Offer a specific, low-commitment value proposition (e.g., 'I saw X and thought of you,' or 'I'm working on Y and recalled your expertise in Z'). Avoid asking for favors initially.

Reconnection Template (Red)

"Subject: Thinking of you - [Specific trigger]? Hi [Name], It's [Your Name]. I know it's been a while, but I recently [mention specific trigger for thinking of them, e.g., 'read an article about X field and immediately thought of your expertise,' or 'heard about Y company acquiring Z and remembered our conversation about it']. Hope all is well! No pressure at all, but I just wanted to reach out and say hello. Perhaps we could connect briefly if the timing is ever right?"

High-Value Reciprocity Angle

Always lead with the intention to give value or offer assistance before expecting anything in return. For consulting Product Managers, this could be offering an insight from another client, sharing emerging market trends, or connecting them with a relevant contact. The goal is to build a bank of goodwill that can be drawn upon later. Explicitly state the value you're offering or the reason you're thinking of them, framing it as beneficial to them.
